Living in Hawthorn Woods

Turn off Old McHenry Road onto a winding street of one-acre lots, ponds and old oaks, and you are house-hunting in Hawthorn Woods, IL.

The village was incorporated in 1958 by its first 71 residents and has grown to about 8,000 people. It was planned around natural open space and estate lots, and many homes still sit on an acre or more. The Hawthorn Woods Country Club, approved in 2003, added a planned community of single-family homes, golf villas and townhomes around a private golf course. There is no traditional downtown; shopping and dining are along Route 12 in Lake Zurich, Route 22 and in Vernon Hills.

Our listings feed comes from MRED and updates through the day, with photos, price history and tax details for each home. You will see older custom homes on large lots, subdivision homes from the 1980s onward, and newer construction in the Country Club. The sections below cover the places, schools and checks that matter when you compare them.

Five checks worth making before an offer

  1. Confirm the village, not just the mailing address

Many homes near Hawthorn Woods use Lake Zurich, Long Grove or Mundelein mailing addresses, and unincorporated pockets sit within and beside the village. Confirm the municipal boundary for the property with the village or Lake County.

  2. Confirm the school district by address

Four elementary districts and three high school districts serve the area. Neighbors on the same road can be in different districts, so check the exact address with each one.

  3. Ask about wells and septic

Some homes on larger lots use a private well and septic system. Schedule water testing and a septic inspection, and ask for the service history.

  4. Read the association documents

In the Country Club and other subdivisions, review the association's budget, assessments, rules and any pending special assessments. Club membership is separate from the association.

  5. Pull the actual tax bill

Get the most recent bill for the property from the Lake County Treasurer and check which exemptions apply. Taxing bodies differ by school district and township, so add insurance, dues and lot upkeep to compare the full monthly cost.
